CLFS 680: Chemical Ecology

This was an excellent course that I would recommend to anyone interested in the life sciences. It was an innovative way to look at how we and other species interact in our world. It discussed some very controversial subjects like Genetically Modified organisms and Animal Testing, it brought together some very basic information and took it to an environmental impact level. I really enjoyed the interaction allowed with other students, and the Teaching innovation projects were one of the most valuable parts of the course, it really brought the focus on what we were taking this course for. It is my opinion that everyone should take this course

This course really challenged me - not only with the content but with my own time management. I feel like I am in grad school and that's cool! Thanks for a great class.

I think that this course is great! Thanks Paul and Bruce!

Thank you for a very challenging and enjoyable course. I learned not only about chemical ecology but also about time management. I learned I can be a part of the MCLFS program, still be a quality teacher and still find time for my family. It was a fascinating course, and one that tops the list of the professionalism and timeliness given to it by the instructors. Thanks for all of your help.

This has truly been a great class for me. Initially, I thought all of the positive comments from previous semesters was probably just a "sales job"; however, I have decided that they were all true. Good job!

I thoroughly enjoyed this course and found the non-traditional format to be stimulating and extremely effective. The professors were incredibly prompt and served a facilitative role well. The amount of work seemed a bit excessive at times, but the assignments were beneficial and challenging overall. Thanks for a wonderful course - I look forward to the next one.

I have found this class to be very interesting, challenging and valuable.

I have enjoyed the class and believe that the amount of work has been acceptable, and necessary for a graduate class credit. The TIP's have been fairly spread out in time and among the class members. You guys have been very helpful, accommodating, resourceful and guiding through the class.

I am new at this online thing too. I don't have a point of reference, but I can tell you that I have learned more than I ever could have imagined from this class. I thought that when there were no tests, that I would not learn and as a teacher, I feel like a real dumbass for thinking that. I have taken so much information away from this class it is ridiculous! I talk about our topics to my classes and they are actually excited for our ecology unit where I have promised to give them even more details from the class. I was a bit upset when I received some "B's" and my husband said, "are you learning?" I said "more than I thought I ever could" that sort of put the grades into perspective. Without sounding like I am trying to kiss up, I really loved this class. I really like everything about the program so far, though I have only just begun. I began the program in September, and Chemical Ecology is my first class. The professors and staff are the utmost in professional. They address questions quickly, and return assignments promptly. Any computer issues that arise (of which you know there will be some in this type of program) are solved quickly and painlessly. The information is current and appropriate. I never thought I would enjoy studying insects as much as I have in this class (that's not all we study, but a large part). The assignments are very doable, and help is given when needed, but they do take a lot of time and effort (definitely a few steps up from the 18 hours of graduate level education classes I've taken before). I am teaching full-time at Sumter High School; this is my fourth year. I have a B.S. in Biology.

One more thing: I was really worried about the non-traditional assessments - how they would be graded and how much I would learn when I didn't have to cram for tests, etc. The grading has been completely acceptable and, although I don't know the material as well as I did the night before the test under more traditional methods, overall I feel I have learned a broader range of material and will retain it longer than the material I "learned" in cramming for tests in college. I have thoroughly enjoyed the discussion methods employed and consider them to be highly effective. I hope this helps in your decision making process - let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you for an enjoyable class. I am looking forward to future classes and I hope that they are as good as this one was.

I think both of you have been great sports and excellent role models for us. I have tried to adopt the way you email us with tidbits and updates for my own students. I have a number who are doing home study type programs and it sure helps to keep them moving towards due dates etc with emails and the like.

This program is working out so well for me. It would NOT have worked for me a number of years ago. I've learned how to motivate myself and also have become more organized (mostly). Chemical Ecology was still one of my favorites of the courses I've taken so far.

Thanks for all your help in making this program happen.

Thank you so much for your guidance as I learned a lot about an area were my knowledge was very limited. Even though I teach chemistry, I have found much of what I have learned can be incorporated into my course and have found that my students find chemical ecology as fascinating as I have. I currently have two students testing the antibacterial effects of onion and garlic on E. coli K12 for a science fair project and hope to have more students looking at how secondary metabolites interact with the environment next year.

I would like to extend a thank you for all your timely responses and help during the course. I was very hesitant about taking chemical ecology especially as an online course, but I found the support received extremely helpful and the topics covered interesting.
